Louis Metals provides reliable Tool and Die Steel P20 Bars, engineered to be versatile and long-running in performance, from our plant in Houston, USA. P20 is a pre-hardened tool steel that finds widespread usage in plastic mold work because of its superior machinability, polishability, and uniform hardness. In Louis Metals, our P20 bars are manufactured to provide consistent mechanical properties and surface finish. Adequate for moderate temperature and pressure conditions, these bars find extensive applications in injection mold tooling, die casting, and precision machining. We ensure top-quality material that meets industry standards and is suitable for precision-based manufacturing operations.
Tool and Die Steel P20 Bars have around 0.4% carbon, 1.5–2.0% nickel, 0.9–1.2% chromium, and traces of molybdenum and manganese. P20 is shipped in pre-hardened condition, having a hardness of 28–34 HRC. It has good toughness, machinability, and stability of dimensions. P20, having tensile strength of about 900 MPa, is suitable for mold use that does not call for post-heat treatment. P20 has good polishability and is thus well suited for shiny mold surfaces. P20’s balanced properties make it easy to produce and work satisfactorily in intricate mold-making processes.

When choosing P20 tool and die steel bars, consider machinability, toughness, hardness, heat treatment capabilities, corrosion resistance, application requirements, cost-effectiveness, and availability of suitable sizes for your specific needs.
Tool and die steel P20 bars are typically sized by their diameter and length, with common diameters ranging from 1 inch to 10 inches, and lengths ranging from 10 to 20 feet.
Tool and die steel P20 bars are not ideal for high-temperature applications. While they offer good toughness and machinability, they have limited resistance to heat compared to steels designed for high-temperature environments.
Tool and Die Steel P20 Bars are commonly applied in the plastics molding business, particularly to injection molds, blow molds, and compression molds. They are applied in die casting dies, tool holders, and base plates. The excellent machinability of P20 enables quick and economical tool-making. Its even hardness and toughness provide consistent performance during mold operation and maintenance. Because of its polishability, P20 is used for parts with smooth finishes. Other applications are frames, backers, and supports for molding dies in automotive, consumer products, and electrical manufacturing.
