Louis Metals is a renowned producer and exporter of Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars in Houston, USA. D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium cold work tool steel used extensively for its outstanding wear resistance and hardness. Our D2 bars are crafted with superior precision and uniformity to cater to challenging tooling applications. Louis Metals ensures that every bar is of international standard with advanced metallurgical processing and rigorous quality control. These bars are best suited for dies, punches, and cutting tools needing extended life of service and abrasion resistance, and D2 becomes a reliable option for high-stress industrial applications.
Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars generally have 1.5% carbon and 11–13% chromium with minor levels of molybdenum and vanadium. This composition provides extremely high hardness—up to 60–62 HRC—upon heat treatment. D2 possesses excellent wear resistance, good compressive strength, and fair toughness. Its high chromium content gives it corrosion resistance, and its air hardening characteristic ensures proper size in quenching. D2 has tensile strength in excess of 1000 MPa and good edge retention, making it suitable f r abrasive and heavy load applications where precision in the long run is needed.

Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars can be welded, but it's challenging due to their high carbon content. Preheating, post-weld heat treatment, and using specific filler materials are essential.
Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars are semi-corrosion-resistant due to high chromium content (12%). While not fully stainless, they offer moderate resistance to rust in less aggressive environments.
Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars should be stored in a dry, ventilated area to prevent moisture exposure. Use protective coatings like oil or rust inhibitors to minimize corrosion risk.
Tool and Die Steel D2 Bars find extensive use in wear-intensive applications, e.g., blanking dies, forming rolls, industrial knives, and stamping tools. They also find application in extrusion dies, shear blades, gauges, and thread rolling tools. Because of their high hardness and wear resistance, D2 bars are suitable for tools that encounter repeated impact and sliding friction. They are often utilized in the automotive, aerospace, and tooling industries. The resistance of the material to deformation under high pressure makes the material most suitable for high-production work that demands long-lasting and hard tooling components.
